Just as we promised, we continue our initiative for sponsoring and giving away free tickets for Open Source community organized events. This initiative started last December when we had few free WordCamp tickets to give away and thought “why not give them to our customers, now that we can’t personally attend”. Initially, this wasn’t meant to become an ongoing project, but we did receive some great feedback from the people who attended the past events and no longer doubted if we should continue this. We learned that these events are a great opportunity for everyone, no matter how advanced user he/she is, to learn, network and gather new ideas and knowledge for the development of their own websites. And if there’s one thing we strongly believe in, it is that we should help our customers along every step of the way: from a quick sign up process, through an easy and straightforward web site build up, to future growth and development of their online presence. I recently overheard my mother telling one of her neighbors that I work as a computer programmer. You can imagine my surprise, as I am a marketing person, and I have never written a single line of anything even remotely resembling a source code. But it was definitely not my mother’s fault, it was me, apparently not being able to explain to her what web hosting is and what I do in a web hosting company. The thought that the situation can be similar for many of my co-workers worried me a little, because as Albert Einstein says: “You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother.”

I know that each and everyone in SiteGround is a fine expert in his/her day-to-day activity, but what each of us tend to miss to some extent is the big-picture perspective. So here comes the first internal conference aiming to make all of us understand the underlying trends in our industry and the company business strategies better.

SiteGround was a proud sponsor for a second consecutive year of the largest Conference for open source software on the Balkans – the OpenFest. The event was held last weekend in Sofia, Bulgaria. This was the 7th consecutive annual gathering of open source developers and fans from the region and it attracted more than 30 speakers and 700 participants.

Among the most interesting speakers on the conference were Cornel Creanga from Adobe Romania, two of the Bulgarian developers, working on the Samba4 project, Philip Paeps – a prominent FreeBSD contributor from Belgium and many more. SiteGround Head System Administrator– Marian Marinov, also participated in the conference with a special presentation on Artificial Intelligence(AI) in the System Administration, which provoked great interest and was visited by more than 150 professionals.

As a web hosting provider we depend greatly on open source software in our daily work. And what is even more important: our customers greatly depend on open source applications for creating and maintaining their websites. We believe that without the open source ideas and applications the web would have never been so widely used by the people and the web hosting industry would have never been so big and successful. That is why we are happy to support OpenFest and other events dedicated to the open source software development as a humble contribution back from the industry to the great idea.

As we already told you, SiteGround headed to HostingCon’09 in the middle of August.  We had so many new things on our mind afterwards, so many talks to get back to and such good time, that we needed a good few weeks time to arrange it all. So, now that our impressions are all piled up, we’d love to share some of the highlights with you.

This is just a quick update to let you all know that SiteGround is heading to HostingCon 2009! The conference is the worlds’ largest gathering of web hosting professionals and each year brings all important players from the hosting industry together.

This year the event takes place in Washington, D.C. from 10th to 12th August. SiteGround is excited to be attending for the third time now, especially since with a projected attendance of over 2,000 Internet professionals from over 30 countries, the 2009 event promises to be the best yet.

We’re looking forward to meeting all of you! So if you happen to be there, drop us a line or simply come and say hello. It will be a pleasure to talk to you in person.

Hello! Some of you may remember my last post about the Web Hosting Day conference in Germany, which a few people from our team (including myself) attended last week. The Web Hosting Day (WHD for short), although organized only for a second time, turned out to be a big event so I would like to make a quick overview of what happened there.

The topic of the event was “cloud computing”**  and “software as a service”. So initially, our team expected that we were going to learn about the latest developments of such platforms and that the information flow would be significant as the topic is quite hot in the industry. Unfortunately, most of the people who spoke at the conference were too busy selling their products (products that were not necessarily new), instead of trying to educate the public. Selling is of course a normal part of such events, but it shouldn’t really be the only focus of a web hosting cloud computing conference.
